Sox pickup Swisher, but was the price too high?

January 6th, 2008 Posted in D.T. Kelly, Fautino De Los Santos, Gio Gonzalez, Nick Swisher, Ryan Sweeney, trade

In a move three days ago (forgive the tardiness, things are hectic here), the Sox pickup A’s Outfielder Nick Swisher for pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Fautino De Los Santos, and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

I haven’t made up my mind on this trade yet. I don’t really have an opinion on Gonzalez or De Los Santos, but I think getting rid of Sweeney wasn’t a smart decision.

According to the report on the White Sox site,

Sweeney, 22, had the only Major League experience of the trio, but the 2003 second-round draft pick never reached his full potential during his short big league stints.

I think this is mighty unfair. Of course he didn’t reach his full potential, he’s only 22. The article really makes it sound as if the Sox gave up on Sweeney, and if that’s the case I think it’s a big mistake. If that’s not the case, then it’s piece of bad writing.

We’ll see how it pans out, but I’m thinking we got screwed. I hope I’m wrong.
