It’s Really Hard to Come Up With a Good Pun for Aardsma.
January 28th, 2008 Posted in Boston Red Sox, Criminal Appeal, D. Aardsma, Miguel Socolovich, Roster Moves, White Sox, Willy Mota, tradeThe Boston Globe is reporting that the White Sox and Red Sox have consummated something less than a whopper of a deal. The Good Sox sent David Aardsma to the Bad Sox for two minor league pitchers: Willy Mota and the unlikely named Miguel Socolovich.
Aardsma is a hard throwing 25-year-old, and a former first round pick. But he has struggled in the majors, especially last year with the White Sox. He posted a 6.40 ERA, although he did strike out nearly 10 batters per nine innings of work.
Honestly, I don’t know much about either guy, and even the usual sources don’t have much info on them. Socolovich, like Aardsma, has recorded a lot of strike outs and walks in the low minors, where he’s operated mainly as a starter.
Mota is a converted outfielder, who just finished his first season of work on the mound in low-A ball. He too showed a penchant for missing both bats and the strike zone.
Given the quantity of options — quality remains to be seen — in the White Sox bullpen this year, this trade probably has minimal effect on the 2008 season.

Looks like the Globe knew what they were talking about.
