A Lucky One for Both Teams
August 17th, 2008 Posted in Jeeves, John Danks, John Danks Special, Oakland A's, White SoxThe White Sox managed to squeeze out a win yesterday afternoon. I’m not going to go as far as to say they didn’t deserve to win, but they were undoubtedly lucky, which makes it one lucky win in the series for each squad.
Danks delivered another John Danks Special (Read down on that for the definition). He went 6 innings and gave up only 1 run. He really didn’t have his stuff, though, as evidenced by his whopping 5 walks. The third inning was where it looked like things would unwravel for the White Sox. Kurt Suzuki led off the inning with a double, which was followed by Nick Swisher just dropping a Frank Thomas fly out. The Swish error was weird, I guess he just closed his glove, because it wasn’t a hard catch and on the replays he kept his eye on the ball the whole time. After that gaffe, resident Sox killer, Emil Brown, came up and singled home Suzuki. With the Sox clinging to a one run lead, it looked like the team was in trouble. It looked like that even moreso after Jack Cust singled to set up bases loaded and no outs. After a mound visit, Danks induced a broken bat lineout to Uribe, which turned into an unassisted double play. A weak grounder to Baric (which Alexei bobbled) and Danks made it out of the inning with out further damage. In a situation like that, you fully expect the A’s to put up at least 1 run on the board, and with the way the Sox couldn’t manage more than one hit per inning (at most) a big inning by the A’s could have been their death knell in Oakland.
Instead of disaster, Danks did a fancy bit of pitching and put the Sox in position to win this series. If you want further examination of the game, check out Chip Shots or The White Sox Blog
