Call Ups and Injuries
September 4th, 2008 Posted in 2008 season, Boone Logan, Bullpen, Call ups & Send downs, Carlos Quentin, Ehren Wassermann, Injuries, Jeeves, Jerry Owens, Joe Crede, Josh Fields, Juan Uribe, Scott Linebrink, White SoxSorry for the delay with this. We were having site troubles, and they didn’t get resolved until now
It’s a bit overdue, but here’s a look at who the Sox called up when the lineups expanded on the 1st.
Call Ups
Boone Logan
Logan was sent down fairly close to the date when rosters would expand, so it was pretty obvious that he would be back up on the Big League team. It wasn’t obvious, how much he would struggle in the minors. In 5 appearances, he pitched 9 innings and gave up 8 runs (6 earned), which is good enough for a 6.00 ERA. Ideally, you would hope that he would have found his mojo down in Charlotte, but whatever ailed him (physically, mentally, or mechanically) followed him down there. I’m not very hopeful that he will be a helpful piece of the puzzle down the stretch. I think I would actually be a whole lot happier if he was relegated to mop up duty.
Ehren Wassermann
He’s the right handed version of Boone Logan, save for the fact that he always dominates in AAA. This brief stint was just like his others. 12 innings spread over 8 appearances and nary a run. He was a valuable reliever for the White Sox in 2007 when he posted a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings of work. If he gets any significant pitching chances, this may be his chance to prove he’s more than a AAAA player. His 2007 performance at least gives proof he can hack it in the bigs, but it’s a matter of whether he can make it a lasting success. He definitely rates above Logan with regards to trust factor.
Paul Phillips
Phillips is a catcher and is basically up with the Sox in case something were to befall AJ or Toby (knock on wood). He was thoroughly unspectactular in AAA, posting a slash line of .269/.314/.352/.666 devillish as that OPS is, it warrants him no playing time so this is the end of the Paul Phillips section.
Chris Getz
Chris Getz is Ozzie’s type of guy, or so it seems based on Ozzie’s comments. He figures to be the primary backup at 2nd base as Uribe is now the third baseman again (see injuries section). He’s hit pretty well this year in the minors with a line of 302/.364/.448/.812. Those aren’t world beater numbers, but certainly good enough for a backup or a utility player. Getz spent 4 games in AAA before getting recalled up, and those games aren’t terribly worth speaking about.
Josh Fields
Fields year has been a bit of a fiasco. He never really got off and running after battling through some early season injuries. That, perhaps, combined with the disappointment of not coming up north with the White Sox doomed him to the worst season of his career. His line, .246/.340/.431/.771 is just ugly. With Crede out he may see some time at 3rd, but most of those AB’s will probably just go to Uribe. He may get a few extra AB’s as a caddy for Thome against left handed pitchers.
Injuries
Scott Linebrink
Liney has probably been the Sox best reliever. It’s up for debate, but I think he gets my vote. He’s basically been out of action since July 8th. He made one appearance on July 22nd, but has been out since, so it’s been abotu 2 months since he’s been with the White Sox. He was activated from the DL a couple of days ago and is supposedly healthy, but we’ll have to wait and see what it looks like when he pitches. If he can pitch effectively and stay healthy, that’s a big boon (not Boone) for the Sox and their ‘pen. That solidifies an extra inning in the game.
Joe Crede
Crede came back to the lineup Aug 25th and proceeded to suck until he hurt himself again yesterday. If you really want to know, his line in 7 games was .174/.208/.304/.512, though impressively he did get himself a triple in that timespan. Crede’s back acted up again against th
Carlos Quentin
The scariest injury of the all has been the hand injury to Quentin. His forearm near his wrist has been sore for a few days now. He was supposed to be in the lineup for the game on the 2nd, but was scratched at the last minute. He then got the day off yesterday as well, which I had assumed was because Ozzie wanted to give him a solid 3 days off with the off day today. He now is out for an indefinite period with a hopeful/likely return on Monday. I believe the injury first flared up on the 27th, when he was given a day off (which was leading into a day off for the team). He came back against the Red Sox on the 29th, but just didn’t look right. His .143/.250/.214/.464 line looks due to this mysterious hand/arm injury. This injury, could very well be the largest deciding factor for the Sox stretch run. So folks, keep your eyes on Quentin, Danks, and Linebrink. 3 very important positions, that need to break right for the Sox to take the division.

Uribe playing over Fields is at third is just wrong, in my opinion. Fields is almost certainly going to be your guy next year, he isn’t particularly young (26, i think), and hes a far superior hitter to Uribe right now. Uribe might, i guess, be a tad better defender, but it’s pointless not to get Fields some valuable at bats at the end of this season. With him on the field over Uribe, I think they’re a better team anyway.

It’s tough to say at this point. I think, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’m more comfortable with Uribe there at 3rd right now. Fields is pretty bad in the field. He has a good arm, but his range and reactions are pretty poor. Uribe has been terrific defensively so far and he’s actually hitting well. He’s hitting .281/.340/.448 as a 3rd baseman, which I’ll take happily.
I totally agree that next year he’s the guy; he has to be the guy. As of right now though, I’m going to take the + defense and whatever we get on offense from Fat Juan. I think his defense would save the Sox more runs than any possible edge Fields would have in the next 22 games offensively, and the way he’s been banged up, there potentially wouldn’t even be an edge until next year.
